Your Mattress Maintenance
16 January 2019
A good mattress deserves proper care, especially when you spend a third of your life sleeping on it. Regular rotation, proper support, and protection against stains and dust mites are simple steps that can significantly extend its lifespan. And don’t forget the box spring — it plays an important role too, even if it often goes unnoticed.
1. Rotate your Mattress
To maximize the life span of your mattress, rotation (head – foot) is strongly recommended. For the first 3 months, it is ideal to rotate the bed every 2 weeks; then after the first 3 months, 4 rotations per year are recommended, corresponding to the change in seasons. How? Simply by turning your mattress 180 degrees so that the the head support becomes the foot support.
2. Take Special Care of it
Jumping on the mattress is obviously not advisable, even if your children love to do it! Damage will be caused to materials in the long run. It is also very important that your mattress be properly supported. Never place a mattress directly on the floor, it is essential that a base and box spring be used.
3. Protect it
Protecting your mattress with a cover is strongly recommended (protect your pillows with pillow covers). In fact, not only does a mattress cover protect from stains that could damage the surface, in most cases it also creates a barrier from dust mites, which can be damaging to your health. Mattress covers are often waterproof and can add extra comfort to your mattress. At La Place, we strongly recommend using them!
4. Removing Stains
Your mattress is stained? Sometimes, simply wiping the stain with a damp rag will solve the problem. If you have a steam-cleaner, it can be used to effectively clean and disinfect your mattress surface. There are other solutions which also can be used depending on the type of stain : vinegar, baking soda, ammonia, etc.
What About your Box Spring?
Your box spring requires no specific maintenance. However, please note that it is strongly recommended that it not be placed directly on the floor. A well ventilated base will help to avoid many problems related to heat and humidity!
